Each Christian sees round him sorrow and struggling which he can’t assist, and his perplexity on the sight is the Lord’s prompting for him to take the very uttermost care of his personal soul, lest he stumble and fall by way of doubt and discouragement. By the care of his soul I don’t imply that he shall coddle and pet and pity himself, nor work himself up into some nice feeling. However I imply that he ought to pray and pray and pray, and search the presence and instructing of the Holy Spirit, till his soul is stuffed with mild and energy, that he could have unquestioning religion within the knowledge and love of God, that he could have unwearied persistence in studying His will (Heb 6:12), and that his love could also be equal to the nice want he sees all about him.
