“Mercy” is not the identical as a shoulder-shrugging “tolerance,” an “something factor goes” angle to life. “Something” does not “go.” “Something” contains vanity, corruption, blasphemy, favouritism and lawbreaking of every kind. If God was “merciful” to that lot, he could be deeply unmerciful to the poor, the helpless, the harmless and the victims. And the entire gospel insists that in exactly these instances his mercy shines out most notably. So should ours.
